The immobilizer function is a part of a system that prevents the engine from starting if the correct ignition key is not used. After ignition ON, a security code is broadcast from the ECM control unit to the immobilizer control unit or the Instrument cluster (US market). Engine start is permitted if a correct response message is received within a certain number of tries and within a certain time from the immobilizer control unit.
