The (VECU) Vehicle Electronic Control Unit supplies and monitors the cranking signal to the starter motor relay. Several types of starter cranking protection are provided so the starter cannot be engaged in unwanted conditions. The starter cranking protection will also limit the maximum cranking time to 18 seconds without cycling the key.
Conditions for diagnostic trouble code (DTC):
1) The starter motor has been activated for too long time
2) Too many tries to start
Observable symptoms
1) Not possible to activate the starter motor during a certain time
2) Text message on the display, Wait to start, and count down
Probable cause
1) Engine is difficult to start
2) Cold ambient temperature
3) Low battery voltage
Detailed information
1) If the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is set intermittently the starter motor protection is functioning and further fault tracing is not necessary
2) If the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is set often or at every attempt to start a fault can be suspected. Continue according to symptom fault tracing Difficult starting
