The Engine Oil Level/Temperature Sensor contains two thermistors, one for engine oil temperature and one for engine oil level. The resistance of the engine oil temperature portion of the sensor changes inversely to the temperature of the engine oil. When the engine oil is cold, the sensor resistance is high. As the temperature of the engine oil increases, the sensor resistance decreases.
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the voltage drop across the sensor and uses this signal to warn the driver and derate the engine to avoid engine damage if the signal is not within programmed limits.
Conditions for diagnostic trouble code (DTC):
1) Temperature too high
Observable symptoms
1) Info lamp lights up if the temperature is moderately above range
2) Red lamp lights up if the temperature is critically above range
3) A buzzer sounds if the temperature is critically above range
4) Engine de-rated

1) Extreme driving conditions
2) Engine cooling fan
3) Oil thermostat
4) Cooling System
5) Clogged oil cooler
6) Engine oil level (EOL) and temperature sensor
