The Engine Oil Temperature/Level Sensor contains two resistors: One for engine oil temperature and one for engine oil level.
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) Placeholder will be present only when a problem with the engine oil level (EOL) circuit has failed. Please reference Placeholder for engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor circuit diagnostics.
The resistance of the engine oil level portion of the sensor changes inversely to the level of the engine oil. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the voltage drop across the sensor and uses this signal to warn that the engine oil level is not within programmed limits. In some cases the engine will derate.
The engine oil level is monitored when the key is on, before the starter is engaged. If low engine oil is detected, either from parking on an incline, or actual low oil, the code will remain active until the next key cycle. It is important that the vehicle is level during key on, or the low engine oil level code may remain.
Conditions for diagnostic trouble code (DTC):
1) Engine oil level (EOL) is below warning level
Probable cause
1) Low oil level
2) Engine oil level (EOL) and temperature sensor
3) Vehicle Not Parked On a Level Surface.
4) Connector
5) Engine Oil Dipstick
Detailed information
1) Engine may have to be off up to 20 minutes depending on temperature before checking the oil level.
