Excessive black smoke has been detected exiting the engine and entering the aftertreatment diesel particulate filter.

Verify the electronic control module (ECM) calibration is correct. Check the calibration revision history found on QuickServe® Online for applicable fixes to the calibration stored in the ECM. If necessary, calibrate the ECM.

Possible causes:

1)Boost leaks in the charge air cooler plumbing
2)A malfunction of the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT)
